draft feedback

Music magazine drafts feedback.

I got feedback off my media teacher and a student that is in my lesson. They both criticised my images, they said they are too blurry which I know they are. They also said I should look more at existing magazines on the market to help me focus on the correct conventions I need to put on my front cover.

How I will address these issues:
I’m trying to organise another photo shoot with the band I want to use. This is proving difficult though due to college and job commitments of the band. I also need to focus more on the typical conventions used on front covers. I’m going to look at existing magazines and choose a style to copy.

initial ideas for my music magazine

magazine mock

This is a very rough idea of what my magazine layout is going to be like. I made the draft on publisher and I will use it as a guideline.

top 40 chart

The top 40 this week has no band or artist from my genre of music. The top 40 is all mainstream music and does not fit into my genre. There are no artists that could be included into my magazine.

price

Price

Three existing magazines are kerrang, rocksound and metal hammer. The price of kerrang is £2.20 and it is issued weekly with no free gifts. Rocksound is issued monthly and costs £3.99. Every month you get a free cd with tracks that are seen as up and coming singles. Metal hammer is similar to rocksound it is issued monthly and costs £3.99 with a free cd on the front.
My magazine will be published monthly because I think the contents within it would then be better than a weekly magazine. My price would be £2.99 which is cheaper than the other monthly magazines. With it being cheaper it may attract more people to buy it. On the front there will be free cd’s and other gifts like free downloads on itunes.

uses and gratification model

uses and gratification model

The uses of kerrang magazine are to give readers the lowdown on the music scene of the particular genres in it. Readers expect to see the usual things like bands and reviews from gigs across the uk."During the 1960s, as the first generation to grow up with television became grown ups, it became increasingly apparent to media theorists that audiences made choices about what they did when consuming texts. Far from being a passive mass, audiences were made up of individuals who actively consumed texts for different reasons and in different ways" taken from http://www.mediaknowall.com/as_alevel/alevkeyconcepts/alevelkeycon.php?pageID=audience
"Uses and Gratifications Theory is an approach to understanding why people actively seek out specific media outlets and content for gratification purposes. The theory discusses how users proactively search for media that will not only meet a given need but enhance knowledge, social interactions and diversion ." taken from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uses_and_gratifications_theory.
people who work for the magazine will do research into the readers and discover what they like. the magazine isn't going to publish things readers aren't going to be interested in. the audience for kerrang isn't going to be interested in Justin bieber so the researchers try and include the bands readers are most interested in by doing polls and statistics of how many of certain issues sell."The collaborative research began to indicate how people saw the mass media and how it was consumed". From katz and blumler.
•Diversion - escape from everyday problems and routine.
•Personal Relationships - using the media for emotional and other interaction, eg) substituting soap operas for family life
•Personal Identity - finding yourself reflected in texts, learning behaviour and values from texts
•Surveillance - Information which could be useful for living eg) weather reports, financial news, holiday bargains.
the diversion theory is that consumers listen to the music they do to release from the real world. the world sometimes isnt a nice place to be in but when you listen to music you can escape and have the option of listening or not. People read for similar reasons but it's slightly different because you imagine more.
the idea of the media relating to personal relationships could be true because of soap operas and stories in magazines like take a break. You can also relate yourselves to some things in the media like sharing values or trying to base yourself on someone you like who is in the media.
the media is good for surveillance because you get offers on holidays and other things. you can also monitor the weather and financial things.

this is my mock of my double page spread i may change it in the future

CONTENTS PAGE MOCK UP

this is the first draft of my contents page its just a rough copy i will probably change it and post the changes up later.

music magazine front cover mock up

this is a first draft of my front cover i may come back and change it.

new demoraliser video

This video is similar to how I will have my photo shoot. The band members are all wearing black which fits in with the song and the lyrics. The black could represent the feelings towards the person the song is about. The set is an abandoned warehouse which also fits in because it is abandoned and left alone which is what the song is about.

College magazine front cover and contents page analysis

College magazine front cover and contents page analysis

My magazine front cover and contents page uses stereotypical conventions related to a college magazine. It has a logo and a main story line on the front which is typical of magazines. On the front I also have cover lines and smaller images about the inside story lines. On my front cover I have an image of someone reading a book which is typical of a college magazine because colleges are places of learning. The contents page I made has conventions of a magazine like what to expect in the issue, I also have a from the editor paragraph at the bottom. The contents are all related to college and work.
My products are aimed at a social group of wyke students. The magazine would be aimed at any student who goes to wyke or wishes to enrol in the future. I have a stereotype picture on the front of someone reading a book which connotes the learning at wyke and the person I used isn’t in a classroom which could also suggest you will enjoy doing work at wyke even out of the classroom. The age group I aim my magazine at is sixteen to nineteen year olds because that is the college average age barrier.
I aimed to attract my audience by using vivid colours that are eye catching. I decided to do this because most magazines have bright headlines on them so it gives my product realism. I made the price of the magazine £1.50 which is cheap for a magazine so it may influence students to buy it because they don’t usually have much money. On the front I have an offer about free stationary which may appeal to students because they can use it for college and it costs them only the price of the magazine. I added smaller pictures of cover lines which will be included inside the magazine, this isn’t a typical convention but I think they catch the audience’s eye and may persuade them to buy the magazine to see the article that goes with the picture.
The technologies I used in the processing of my magazine were all in Photoshop. I used the transformation tool to rescale my images so I could make them fit and make the cover line photos smaller to fit near them and not take up too much room. I used the text tool, changed the size of the font and the type of font. To get the colour match my image I used the eyedropper tool and then made my text the same colour as the leggings in my image. For the contents page I designed I made the main colour scheme purple to match the college’s logo and I used the transformation too again for my text. I used a rectangle tool as well to make my backgrounds coloured. I used the spot healing brush to change some blemishes on my main image on the front cover. I didn’t edit my products that much because I like how my images turned out.
